#601: PRIVATE Guided tour around religious sites in Etchmiadzin
This is a tour to Vagharshapat city, the alternative of the Vatican for Armenians. Being the first country that accepted Christianity in 301 AD, Armenia kept it’s religious identity and remains independent from the Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant churches. Armenian Church is called Apostolic, and the religious center is Etchmiadzin mother cathedral located in Vagharshapat city. Etchmiadzin is a Christian cathedral and was built around 301AD, the year of accepting Christianity by Armenians.
Vagharshapat is full of Historic churches even beside Etchmiadzin. The most famous are St. Hripsime and St. Gayane churches, that are not only beautiful examples of Armenian architecture but also historical landmarks that survived up to our days.
Another fabulous sight is the museum of Etchmiadzin, located in the complex of mother Cathedral. Here are located some of the most precious gifts given to the Armenian church during history. Among the priceless artifacts, the most famous ones are the part of the cross on what Jesus was crucified, as well as, the “holy lance” with what the Roman soldier pierced him.
The last sight in this tour is the “ruins of ancient Zvartnots” Cathedral. Even in ruins, this landmark has such a strong atmosphere that is one of the most visited sites in Armenia.
Little bit western from Etchmiadzin, is located Sardarapat. This is a little town where an important monument for all Armenians is located. Sardarapat became famous at the beginning of the 20th century when in May of 1918, Armenians fight the Turkish Army and thus gain independence for the first Armenian republic. By request, we can visit also this last site during the trip.
